The Dublin City University (DCU) is launching a scholarship programme at undergraduate and postgraduate level that will be available as of September 2017 for refugees and asylum seekers. Each of its 5 faculties will provide a scholarship while 10 others will be offered for studies on its online platform DCU Connected.
For this and several other initiatives in favor of refugee inclusion, DCU is the first Irish university to receive the designation ‘University of Sanctuary‘, awarded by the City of Sanctuary, an organisation that supports efforts in the UK and Ireland building a culture of hospitality for people seeking asylum. Other integration actions by DCU include:
- a book club providing books for people living in direct provision in Mosney;
- the Langua-Culture Space initiative, where DCU students teach beginner level English to asylum seekers and refugees;
- DCU Refugee Week, a week of activities to raise awareness about refugees among students and staff.
Similar scholarship programmes are set up in Italy.
