Theorizing Social Attachment

Attachment refers to the different types of bonds that bind individuals to each other and to society. It is a question of analyzing how these bonds intertwine in each individual to allow his attachment to society, but also how societies construct and transform the norms of this intertwining. How and to what extent can one and must one be at the same time in solidarity with one’s family, in solidarity with one’s affinity groups, solidarity with one’s own company or occupational group and in solidarity with one’s nation? If this question is posed to every human being and corresponds in this to an interrogation of universal nature, the answer differs according to the social groups, but also and especially according to the societies. Therefore, the central question of the conference is to understand the anthropological foundations of human solidarity while sociologically analyzing its variable forms in the contemporary world, both in economically developed societies and in emerging countries. Through the concept of social attachment, it is a question of better understanding what makes the individuals of modern societies hold together, but also, on the contrary, what makes them more fragile. In other words, to study social attachment in modern societies is to take into account both strength and permanence as well as vulnerability and the breaking of solidarity bonds.
