Position Title : Caregivers

Duty Station: Various Locations across Greece

Classification : Ungraded position, attractive remuneration package

Type of Appointment : Special short-term contract with possibility of extension


Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. In Greece, IOM is focusing on responding to the Mediterranean migrant’s crisis, in support of the Greek Government and in cooperation with all other agencies involved. IOM currently implements interventions within the areas of emergency, preparedness and response, disaster risk reduction, livelihoods, healthcare and psychosocial assistance, assisted voluntary return of migrants, migration and development, resettlement and repatriation, family reunification, counter human trafficking, assistance to vulnerable migrants.


In the context of the emergency situation related to the migrants across Greece, IOM Athens is establishing a pool of candidates interested to join the organisation as soon as possible.


Core Functions / Responsibilities:

• Providing care to children residing in the facility on a daily basis
• Ensuring security of accommodated children, including during night, weekends and public holidays. In the event of a crisis or urgency, the caregiver undertakes incident management, informs other staff and/ or the Coordinator and receives relevant instructions.
• Taking care of children’s physical hygiene and clothing (distribution, needs, cleanliness), escorting children to social and/or medical services when necessary.
• Taking care of night-time preparation and being present during night shifts.
• Having an overview of the general hygiene and living conditions in accommodation rooms, in cooperation with children and hotel staff (cleaners) and based on the daily routines or regulations identified in each facility.
• Assisting with the distribution of basic goods to children and notifying the Coordinator if further items and distributions are needed.
• Checking the condition of food and ensuring that all meals are served in the agreed times.
• Organizing in cooperation with other staff members the children’s daily routine and structured daily activities, while also supporting educational and recreational activities.
• Contributing to the daily life and procedures of the facility to create a supportive and protective environment, working individually and collectively with children.
• Providing services regarding the laundry schedule
• Undertakes other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications and Experience


• University degree from an accredited academic institution; or high school diploma with 2 years of relevant working experience.



• Familiar with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees;
• Experience in working in a multi-cultural environment;
• Proficient use of commonly used IT equipment and the appropriate software solutions.
• At least two years of previous relevant work experience;
• Experience in an international environment;
• Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Office, etc)



Fluency in English and Greek is required.

• Previous working experience with children is an advantage
• Background working with refugees or migrants will be a distinct advantage


• The position is subject to funding confirmation.
• Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment and verification of residency, visa and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable.
