Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical and humanitarian action-driven organization that offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The MSF movement is built around 5 operational centers (OC) supported by 23 sections and offices worldwide. The MSF-Mission in Greece provides humanitarian and medical assistance to the refugee and migrants populations fleeing conflict in their home countries.
Main purpose
Providing psychological support to patients according to MSF principles, standards and procedures in order to improve the patients’ mental health.
Accountabilities
- Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient’s condition
- Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment.
- Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions
- Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities. Working in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure appropriate terminology and behaviour during sessions
- Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
- Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential.
- Carrying out psychological support sessions, assessment and follow up, as needed according with MSF protocols
- Providing psychoeducation on context-related psychological reactions and recommended coping strategies
- Providing clinical activities in collaboration with intercultural Mediator to reduce the gap created by both linguistic and cultural barriers between patient and psychologist
- Providing Mental Health certificate when indicated
- Identifying patients in need of Psychological First Aid (PFA) and provide PFA
- Actively participating in the multi-disciplinary approach between professions through identification of other patient’s needs and collaboration with other multi-disciplinary team members to ensure holistic care is provided
- Identifying patients in need of referral to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance in order to improve the patient’s condition
- Ensuring referrals to other specialists/institutions providing the documentation needed for continuity of care and follow up on the patient’s evolution when appropriate
- Producing patient documentation according with MSF protocols
- Ensuring that patient documentation is kept confidential and stored according with MSF protocols
- Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
- Participating in the reporting of statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
- Knowing and implementing MSF protocols related to his/her work
- Supporting in networking and maintaining good collaboration with other organizations and external partners
- Participating in the creation of material/tools needed for mental health activities
- Actively participating in trainings and supervision to maintain quality of care
- Actively participating in multidisciplinary meetings and briefings/debriefings
- Supporting in provision of trainings or sensitization activities on mental health to other MSF staff and to staff of other organizations, if relevant
- Informing supervisor and the multidisciplinary team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from health care perspective
- Being flexible and adapting to changes, undertaking other tasks or responsibilities according to the project’s needs, changes in activities, upon request of the line manager.
Requirements
- Education: Essential degree or diploma in Psychology. Essential License to practice the profession of Psychologist in Greece
- Experience: Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGOs. Desirable previous experience in migration, trauma
- Languages: Essential Greek and English.
