CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Prevailing academic and policy understandings of displacement often fail to capture the full spectrum of lived experiences, especially those that slip through the cracks of conventional theoretical categorizations and institutional logics. Inspired by works on imperfect utopias, feminist/queer epistemologies, and critical race studies, this workshop explores non-normative and “unworldly” experiences of displacement with the aim of imagining new, breathable forms of emplacement. What forms of normative violence become animated as we move through the everyday spaces of belonging and exclusion and what are the affects and effects of being socially and institutionally rendered unintelligible? How do we navigate the future from within this present of intensified racism, xenophobia, homo/transphobia, and ableism and what kind of alternative imaginaries can we mobilize to disrupt current distributions of (un)breathability and social space? In the face of an increasingly displacing and de-placing world, together, we hope to craft a version and a vision of an imperfect future — one that remains ever-fluid, dynamic, and open to what lies beyond established frameworks.
We invite students, early career researchers, independent scholars, and activists working on issues of, among others, race, class, migration, environmental justice, gender, and sexuality to share self-reflective perspectives and situated accounts of how delegitimised and marginalised populations navigate the social milieu amidst rising neo-fascist, anti-migrant, anti-queer, anti-black, and anti-Roma violence. By turning our focus on lived experiences of displacement and suffocation —not only those of migrants, queers, or refugees, but also of anyone who has felt space becoming increasingly unbreathable— our aim is to offer a platform for collective reflection on the (im)possibilities of imagining and inhabiting the future. We strongly endorse abstracts based on preliminary ideas and works in progress. Through sharing questions, insights, and aspirations, and through experimenting with collective imagination practices, we will collectively venture to unpack the possibilities of forging radical solidarities and resistances “from below”.
The workshop will take place in Athens (Greece), but we are also interested in contributions that consider different spatial and sociopolitical contexts which can foster much-needed intersectional dialogues. We furthermore welcome approaches encompassing situated planetarities that stretch beyond specific spatial contexts, and which can offer critical conceptual and methodological tools for imagining emplacement, and the various implications of demanding a just future.
Please submit an abstract (up to 300 words, ENG/ELL) outlining your working idea by 1st May 2025 at breathable.futures.workshop@gmail.com. Participants will be expected to give brief presentations of their work, which will be followed by collective discussion. We are looking forward to receiving your contributions and meeting you in Athens!
Workshop for students, early career researchers, independent scholars, activists, and anyone interested in co-imagining breathable futures.
